Cookie Policy

This page explains how VeroPeak uses cookies and similar technologies, what each category is for, and how you can control your preferences at any time using the cookie banner or the Manage cookie preferences link in the footer.

Overview

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. They support essential functions such as security and session management, and, with your consent, help us understand how people use our content and deliver relevant advertising. Because VeroPeak provides planning guides for hiking, camping, and outdoor photography across Canada, we use cookies to keep the site reliable, measure which topics are most helpful, and, if you choose, tailor ads you may see on other platforms. You can change your selections at any time through the cookie preferences panel. Using our site with only essential cookies will keep core features running, while analytics and marketing features will remain off until you opt in.

Categories of cookies we use

Essential cookies

Required for core site functionality, including page navigation, security protections, load balancing, and consent storage. These cookies are always active and do not require consent.

  • session_id - maintains your browsing session
  • csrf_token - helps protect forms from misuse
  • cookie_consent_status - remembers your choices

Retention: for the browsing session or up to 12 months for preference storage.

Analytics cookies

Help us measure traffic and improve content quality by understanding which pages and topics hikers find most useful. These cookies are activated only after you choose Accept All or enable Analytics in preferences.

  • _ga, _ga_XXXXXXX - Google Analytics identifiers
  • _gid, _gat - traffic and request rate control

Retention: up to 14 months when enabled.

Marketing cookies

Support personalized advertising and remarketing, including measurement of which ads lead to visits or form interactions. These cookies are optional and set only with your consent.

  • Google Ads tags - conversion and remarketing
  • Meta Pixel - ad delivery and measurement

Retention: up to 540 days when enabled.

Your choices and how to manage them

You control whether analytics and marketing cookies are active. When the banner appears, you can select one of three options: Accept All to enable analytics and marketing, Reject Non-Essential to keep only essential cookies, or Manage Preferences to choose per category. Your selections are stored in localStorage for 12 months so the banner does not reappear on every visit. You can also reopen the panel any time using the Manage cookie preferences link in the footer.

If you change your mind later, open the preferences panel and adjust the toggles. Essential cookies cannot be turned off because they are needed for site security and basic operation. For additional details about how we process data associated with analytics and advertising, please review our Privacy Policy.

Technologies we may use

When enabled by you, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand traffic patterns, Google Ads and associated tags for conversion tracking and remarketing, and the Meta Pixel for advertising on Facebook and Instagram. These tools rely on cookies, pixels, and device identifiers such as IP address and approximate location to attribute visits and measure outcomes. We configure analytics to avoid collecting sensitive categories and to limit retention in line with the periods listed above.

You can also control cookies at the browser level by clearing stored cookies and site data. Most browsers allow you to block third-party cookies or enable strict tracking protection. If you block or delete cookies, some preferences may be lost and certain features might not function as intended.

Retention and updates

We keep consent records for up to 3 years for audit purposes. Analytics data is retained up to 14 months once enabled, and marketing identifiers may persist for up to 540 days depending on partner defaults. Essential preference cookies may remain up to 12 months. We review this Cookie Policy periodically to reflect changes to our services or applicable guidance. If we make material changes, we will post a notice on the homepage and update the date below at least 14 days before the change takes effect.
